When a patient decides to substitute hormones, or increase levels of certain hormones, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is an option. HRT involves the use of certain medications to adjust hormone levels in the body.
HRT medications are used in several instances, including women going through menopause and transgender people seeking gender realignment. Some of the most popular HRT medications include Premarin, Provera, and Prempro.
In 2002, the publication of the Women’s Health Initiative Study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, detailed the risks of HRT to women. It concluded that the health risks outweighed the benefits of HRT. Below is a quote directly from the study:
"Conclusions Overall health risks exceeded benefits from use of combined estrogen plus progestin for an average 5.2-year follow-up among healthy postmenopausal US women. All-cause mortality was not affected during the trial. The risk-benefit profile found in this trial is not consistent with the requirements for a viable intervention for primary prevention of chronic diseases. . . ."
In recent years, numerous lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers due to severe side effects caused by HRT medications. Some of these side effects include:
Thus far, many cases have resulted in favorable jury verdicts on behalf of the plaintiffs. Some ten thousand lawsuits were lodged against Wyeth (which Pfizer purchased in 2009), claiming the company oversold the benefits of Prempro while failing to warn of the risks. After the courts found Pfizer and Wyeth guilty of “wanton and reckless” behavior, they settled some 6,000 suits for $896 million and set aside $330 million to settle 4,000 remaining suits.
In 2012, a federal judge certified a class action in California against Wyeth for its medications Premarin, Prempro, and Premphase (Krueger v. Wyeth, Inc., 03cv2496).
